Maybe The Western Church Is Missing Something
0 Comments Published July 31st, 2009 in Uncategorized. That’s what I got to thinking when I read that the military rulers of Fiji have banned what is essentially “Hymn-Idol” from happening this year for fear of it encouraging political instability. Every year, the Methodist church in Fiji has a choir contest and worship session where about 10,000 of the 300,000 Fijian Methodists attend. This year they are anticipating a crowd of 50,000 to protest the government. It seems that in the Pacific, Christianity is not just a private belief system and when they sing O Holy Night they mean it:
Truly He taught us to love one another,
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother.
And in his name all oppression shall cease.
Your Correspondent, Understandably, when he sings hymns, people threaten violence
